Murder attempt: Sarajevo Jewish community leader attacked with a metal weight on a heavy chain

Napisano 22.03.2015. 22:54

Jewish community leader and the secretary for Jewish culture and religious affairs, Eli Tauber, was attacked yesterday evening in a caffe in the Old City of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

An unknown suspect attempted to murder Eli with a heavy metal weight attached to a chain. The Jewish leader suffered head injuries, while drinking a cup of coffee in Sarajevo. "There is no doubt that this was a murder attempt", said Eli who was lucky to survive.

"An anti-semitic sentiment in today's Sarajevo is almost a common sense" - a Croat journalist from Mostar explains. "In Sarajevo, anti-israeli news are often being promoted by major media such as Klix.ba".

Sarajevo became a majority muslim city after the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with a non-muslim population dropping from around 45% (1991) to around 5% (2015). Over a quarter of Bosnia-Herzegovina (5 cantons) is predominantly Muslim populated. In the 5 cantons, radical autonomous Wahhabi communities have been established. Over 30 Bosnian Muslims, mostly from these Wahhabi villages and larger cities, have died in Syria fighting for ISIS.

On the other hand, Christians (Catolic and Ortodox) inhabit 75% of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Christian populated federal states are considered safe as they are under tight control of a local police. The security and the police on the federal level (SIPA, OSA) are unofficially under Christian control.
